The 100 game challenge!
Submitted by Earok on Fri, 05/22/2009 - 23:08
Edit - Just gave this bit of an update.
Just for fun, I decided to create myself a challenge: List 100 games I have beaten.
I have actually finished a lot more then that, possibly 200-300, but I decided to narrow it down significantly based on a few rules I thought up:
-
You have to feel accomplishment about beating the game. This is highly subjective, for instance, I obviously can't list You have to burn the rope, but I also won't list ports of Arcade games that give you infinite credits (Street Fighter II). Also, I have included some really easy games because I felt proud when I beat them in my pre-teenage years.
-
If a game has no clear ending, such as most flight simulations, you can count it if you can justify why you consider the game beaten.
-
No Demos or Shareware. Has to be full version.
-
You have beaten the game without use of cheats or trainers. Walkthroughs is a maybe
-
The game has to be beaten without use of an emulator - Excepting PSN, XBLA, Virtual Console etc - because of the unfair advantages an emulator can give you.
-
If you have beaten multiple versions of the game, you can only list it once.
-
You can't include a game you yourself made (Hence no Derelict or Kiwi's Tale!)
-
To significantly narrow it down, if you have beaten multiple games in the same series, you can only count it once. If you have beaten the entire Ultima series - tough luck, only list it once.
-
The previous rule also includes games in a single franchise, even if made by different developers, such as the James Bond games.
So, here is my list:
-

Well, there you go! A fairly healthy mix of consoles and computers, from simple action games to complicated simulators, more old then new, and mostly commercial but with a few freeware classics. Quite a few Sega, Nintendo and Microsoft games - but only a single game beaten on a Sony console (Edit - now Two)!
So, my challenge to you is to come up with your own list, and either post it as a comment here or on your own blog or favourite forum. Good luck!

Holy crap, curse my ADD riddled nature - I think I've beaten 5 games on that list.
How the heck did you beat Moonstone?
Beat Moonstone with a lot of practice. Used to play it with some friends a fair bit. Also gaining extra lives by returning to your home helps. Some of the really tricky sections (such as the swamp in the lower right, and the dragon), well, it's just a matter of getting used to avoiding the one-hit-kill traps.
Moonstone was an awesome game, it really deserves a sequel/remake.
Just out of curosity, would you mind listing the ones you have beaten from this list?
Heh I haven't even completed enough games to get up to 20ish.. I tend to get bored..
I'm pleased to see Quarantine on the list - One of my all-time favourites! Hmm... I reckon I've completed about 120 games, but with those criteria, it's more like 70 (no emulated games, etc). Also: Strange to see Apocalypse on there as your only PS1 game... I'm mid-way through playing it now - which will make it my second completed PS1 game when I'm done :)
Quarantine was great! I consider it a great grand-daddy of the GTA games. A modern version of it would be awesome. I should still have a go at Quarantine II sometime.
Really cool list, a few of those games on there I've come close to beating (Dune I/II, Quake I etc) but didn't for whatever reason. A few of the games on that list are also ones I really want to play, particularly Anachronox.
I should find myself a copy of Apocalypse since my Kirsty has a PS2. Really enjoyed that game, asides from being quite quirky in that it "stars" Bruce Willis, it reminds me a fair bit of Commando (On C64) which has always been my favourite game.
Definitely play Anachronox if you can. It's a really fun and involving RPG with a great sense of humour.
Also I know what you mean about coming close to beating a game but not quite finishing it. Dune II is actually the perfect example... I bought it in 1992, played it solidly for weeks, totally loved it, but ended up running out of spice on the penultimate mission. And for some reason, I never re-tried the mission. This bugged me for *years* until I finally re-installed the game in about 2007, played through it again and finished it. You know what? It's still a great game, even with all the advances in the RTS genre since then. And completing it was definitely worthwhile :) Of course, I only completed it with one faction...
Quake is another game I played 'back in the day' but I didn't think much of it then. Despite quite a bit of 2-player deathmatching, I never got into the single-player game. Anyway, I reinstalled it last year and enjoyed it so much that I ended up blasting through the whole thing, and the expansion episodes. To my surprise, it wasn't even all brown!
As a big fan of the 1984 Dune film the thing I like the most about the Westwood Dune series is how faithful they've been to David Lynch's creative vision, even the newer ones made decades after the film was released. I really want to finish the entire series in order.
Quake I is definitely one I need to play through sometime. I did own the full version at one stage but never even got around to finishing the second episode.
Phantasy Star is on GBA???!!!
Must Get.
Requesting update!
I think it's an advanced Zen Koan. I have yet to figure out the exact message, it maybe deceptive. :P
I completed my first game for 2013. Have you seen my list? (Hint google spreadsheet.)
